2021 Cicadas 17 year Fly Fishing Event
Have you heard all the "buzz" about the 17 year fly fishing opportunity coming up next month here in Maryland? The Brood-x Cicadas event, experts say will start to emerge from the ground the first 2 weeks in May by the billions and should be around for two more weeks after emerging. As they die off some will land on the surface of creeks, ponds, rivers and the bay. Capturing the attention of typical surface feeders like smallmouth bass, striped bass and maybe snakeheads. This should make for epic and fun fly fishing as you will hopefully get to see the Cicadas being gobbled up from the surface of the water. This is new fly fishing opportunity for me so I've been doing tons of research on which patterns and gear to use. For a PATTERN - I chose the ReelFlies Olive Cicadas, GEAR - 5 wt rod, floating line of course, and 6lb fluorocarbon tippet. This pattern is surprising light and casts easily with 5 wt floating line, seems to consistently land hook-side down as it should, and looks very realistic on the water. Since I started seriously fly fishing only about 20 years ago and will likely be too old for the next cycle so this is a once-in-a-lifetime event for me and I have high hopes that it will be a memorable one.
